Percussion in the Round. Experience the sounds of the SCSU Percussion Collective like never before. The program will immerse the audience in a surround-sound concert experience with music from the SCSU World Drumming Group and the SCSU Percussion Ensemble. In addition to the folkloric Afro-Cuban rhumba performed by the World Drumming Group, musical highlights include two original compositions by SCSU music majors Matthew Nelson and Devin Tomczik.

Join the Percussion Ensemble for Toru Takamitsu's Raintree for percussion trio. Select members of the audience will have the opportunity to make music from their seats during three of the "free" sections. The audience will be instructed to play quietly and sparsely on a single glockenspiel bar, which they will receive before they are seated. The effect will be a shimmering of sound from throughout the auditorium.

SCSU Percussion Students, and Composition and New Media majors Devin Tomczik and Matthew Nelson have written two pieces for percussion and real-time computer generated audio. Nelson’s The City, utilizes a process called "eco-systemic composition." The idea is to place two very sensitive microphones in the middle of the audience to capture what they (and the embedded percussionists) play, feed those sounds into the computer, and return the audio in 5.1 Dolby surround sound The ecosystem created by the live performers, the audience, and the computer generated sounds become the composition. Tomczik’s Summer Rain, will ask the audience to help create a thunderstorm soundscape during the performance by clicking their fingers to simulate raindrops falling to the ground.

The final piece on the program, Tacoma Narrows, is a new piece for percussion ensemble performed "in the round" and is based on the bridge collapse in 1945 in the Tacoma Narrows of Washington state. The 3 short movements featured extended techniques for percussion including bowing, dipping, scraping, and the playing various parts of the auditorium's structure.

Always full of unique and engaging sounds, the SCSU Percussion Collective program “Cirque du Batterie” is designed to entertain and engage.
