If you have ever tried to or have successfully modeled anything on a computer, you will know there are two fundamental aspects to it: Free form drawing with some sense of proportions that you determine, and Drawing with exact measurements. If you follow these two aspects, the final product will not only have a pleasing and right form, but will also satisfy the fit and functions you had in mind when you began composing. In this flex-time course (sign up for 1/2 day morning or full day), we will work (and play) together to help you draw in 2D to create SVG closed paths. Once you master SVG paths, or feel good about it, we’ll take you to the next level and demystify 3D modeling for you—you will extrude your SVG curves to create 3D objects. This extrusion will be accomplished using your 3D modeling software, and your extruded 3D objects will be verified as suitable models for 3D printing.Once you cut your teeth on SVG extrusions for objects fit for 3D printing, then you will move on to playing and composing with solids. You will transform solids into artistic compositions or into functional and durable parts. We will teach you two fundamental strategies to do so : additive and subtractive strategies. When you are ready to leave the free form solids environment and enter the more restrictive environment to design with measured parameters, we’ll introduce you to work in NURBS modeling by introducing you to Rhinoceros 3D. In Rhino, you will discover the sky is the limit for you to create models suitable for 3D printing. In Rhino, modelers can compose artistic free forms, architectural structures, measured models, and dimensionally rigorous parts. We provide a high teacher-to-student ratio (1 to 3) in this course, limiting seats to 6 students. We provide paced learning for each modeler, which means every student will create 3D objects from SVG paths, learn to work with solids, and have an introduction to 3D modeling software, but each modeler will work at a pace that fosters self-proficiency and hands-on conceptual learning.Bring your own laptop (any platform).FULL day attendees are welcome to bring a lunch (we have frig & microwave), or select from about a dozen restaurants within 2 blocks of the class. Know that you are also welcome to work through your lunch (12 to 1 pm) should you so desire.
